I unluckily put the pin in it three times which were incorrect, only to see Protected across the screen.

I then trawled internet sites as I certainly wasn't going to part with my hard earned money to MasterCare for them to come and reset it. Then I came across a site that told me to pull the plug out the wall for an hour then plug it back in, then switch the vcr on then press the up arrow and the record buttons together at the same time for 5 or so seconds, then hurray it was unlocked but not set back to factory settings so I got another 3 try's of entering my pin again which i got correct, so if you know the pin then you can try this.
