This John Deere repair guide should help anyone who may have the John Deere STX 38 lawn tractor. The John Deere STX38 (black deck) has an issue where the deck belt will continually fall off. While this may not be a dealer approved fix, it has proven to work on several instances.
This fix will also work on just about any other lawn tractor with belt issues Craftsman, Murray, Bolens, Troy Built, Yard Man, etc. Always take appropriate precautions when working with this type of equipment, sun screen, proper hydration, bug spray, music, etc.

There's the argument that the gear ones are simpler so less to go wrong. Don't know first hand as both my tractors are gear instead of hydro. Probably as much of an argument of stick vs. Auto in a car - both have their place and pluses/minuses.

They go for $500 and up here. Looks to be in decent shape.

I would check the usual things - starts easily, no smoke at start up/throttling up, no evidence of oil leaks, PTO engages (make sure you throttle down to 1/4 to 1/2 before engaging the PTO to prevent burning up the electric PTO - this is per the manual), deck doesn't feel like it's vibrating wildly, making odd noises. Make sure it steers correctly, drive while turning lock to lock. Drive it and make sure it goes into each gear cleanly and all the gears work. With these transaxles (and other lt/gt transaxles) they use a ball bearing sitting on a spring to make the feeling of it snapping into each gear.
The springs get tired over time and thus make finding the gear harder. The transaxles in these are considered 'non-servicable' but you can work on them - there's a Peerless tech manual free online and videos on You-Tube of guys pulling them apart and fixing them. BTW Don't dump the clutch in top gear, the tractor will wheelie and it's hard on the transaxle, plus it's a bit of a surprise as the thing shoots forward with you in tow. The yellow decks are supposed to be more solid construction/last longer from what I know. That doesn't mean the black deck won't work for you and cut well however. The STX was a popular mower for a reason, they do a nice job, they're designed simply, and they're simple to maintain. They must have changed the design - I have two pedals on mine, one for clutch on the left, brake on the right.
No left-hand pedal in the pic above. Check that the brakes work - they're easy to adjust with a nut or replace (two small pads on the transaxle). Crawl underneath and inspect/feel the belts - are they rough and crumbly or in good shape? Chuck muer biography. You'll want to inspect the main drive belt that runs from the engine to the transaxle, the PTO drive belt to the deck, and the belts on the deck. The main drive belt is the headache to replace since it's tucked up behind various belt guards. Move the deck up and down to make sure it travels correctly. One other thing, be careful not to drop the hood when closing it.
They can break. I haven't had a problem with mine but others here have. I just lower it gently and avoid whacking it into stationary objects (which is recommended for any tractor anyway. When I was looking for my first Deere, I kept coming up on the STX38.black deck, yellow deck and every degree of condition, from $450-$750 I actually called the local dealer to see if they had any advice on them and the salesman had nothing bad to say about them, other than they were a 'budget minded' model. He told me they we originally intended to have a 6 year service life, but if they were taken care of, easily out lasted that. I ended up spending a few weeks scouring craigslist and came up with an LT150 with less than 200 hours from a Deere Service Tech for $600!

What you're looking at is cleaner than most of what I saw in that price range. I'd have to bet you'd be better off to lay down $500 on that rather than spend twice that for a new mower from a farm supply or Walmart. At the same time, with a little looking around, you'd probably stumble on an LX or LT for a similar price. I can tell you from almost ten years of working in a deere dealership that the STX is a reliable little machine. The black deck is a much thinner deck than the yellow.I see lots of the black decks with people who have dusty/rocky yard with holes eaten through them but if your lawn is nothing but grass then this shouldnt happen. The Gear and hydro are both still going strong on many of these even approaching 20 years on some of them now.I would offer him $450 and see what he says.If he wont budge its well worth $550 if it has been cared for.
