Posted : admin On 28.08.2019After playing organs from Viscount, Hohner and Yamaha and a Roland G800 keyboard for a long time I bought this Hammond Aurora Classic a few years ago. It's a real pleasure to play this vintage beauty. Certainly you can't compare the sound of the fully transistorized Aurora to a B3. But it still does a good job with its 9 tonebars, percussion, vibrato and original Leslie. In this video I present some of the typical hammond organ sounds of that model together with some images of the boards inside.
The organ has meanwhile some glitches like the Easy Play memory that does not work reliably. But well, it's anyway more fun to use the electromechanical 'Note A Chord' that holds the keys in its pressed down position until you play a new chord.
Auroras are very solid state. Most Hammonds did come with the option of an external leslie (some had them built in too) but the organs were generally assembled from japanese-built pcbs. Most 'hammond' specialists won't want to know about these, only the tonewheel series and 'tonewheel-like' solid state B200 series are really considered as 'proper' hammonds and sought after by musicians. Our local co-op was a Hammond dealer and I remember hopping from one Aurora to another tinkling away as a child until I was staggered to hear a faithful rendition of 'Chariots of Fire' from an older boy who grabbed all the attention. (That dates the era!).
